- 1409: the word ‘Football’ is documented for the first time in England


- 1863: the Football Association is fully formed.


It is the oldest football association in the world and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the amateur and professional game in its territory.

– 1870: the first International football match is played. Scotland vs England.


The 1872 association football match between the national teams of Scotland and England is officially recognised by FIFA as the sport's first-ever international. It took place on 30 November 1872 at Hamilton Crescent, the West of Scotland Cricket's ground in Partick, Glasgow. The match was watched by 4,000 spectators and finished as a 0–0 draw.


- The 1871-72 Football Association Challenge Cup was the first staging of the Football Association Challenge Cup

– 1888: the Football League is formed

Founded in 1888, the Football League is the oldest such competition in world football.

- 1904 FIFA was founded

– 1930: the first World Cup



It took place in Uruguay from 13 to 30 July 1930. Thirteen teams (seven from South America, four from Europe and two from North America) entered the tournament. In the final game, hosts and pre-tournament favourites Uruguay defeated Argentina 4–2 in front of a crowd of 68,346 people to become the first nation to win the World Cup.
